2nd October is known for the birth of the father of the nation. However there is one more scion of India who was born today. This man was none another than the great Lal Bahadur Shastri, also known as the unifier of the nation. He was responsible for bringing many schemes that led to the development of the nation and brought prosperity. During the war with Pakistan, he raised the cry of Jay Jawan Jay Kisan which was immensely popular. He was admired by both the opponents as well as his compatriots. But his untimely death has been cloaked in a shroud of mystery.

After Shastri’s death, his wife Lalita Shastri had alleged he was poisoned. An epic poetry book in Hindi titled Lalita Ke Aansoo written by Krant M. L. Verma was published in 1978. In this book, the tragic story about the death of Shastri has been narrated by his wife Lalita Shastri.

The Indian Government released no information about his death, and the media then was kept silent. The possible existence of a conspiracy was covered in India by the ‘Outlook’ magazine. A query was later posed by Anuj Dhar, author of CIA’s Eye on South Asia, under the Right to Information Act to declassify a document supposedly related to Shastri’s death. There has even been a movie known as the Tashkent files which cover the supposed conspiracy on Shastri’s death.
